The new TSR is the last generation train and is an evolution of the TAF (High Capacity Train). Even though these two models are externally quite similar, the TSR has been significantly changed and upgraded both in terms of comfort and technology. The rationale was to find the best solutions for suburban transportation that is characterized by frequent stops. These trains have been built by ATI AnsaldoBreda – Firema – Keller. On the whole, 78 trains have been ordered with different configurations (plus 8 Locomotives of the M type) and they will become gradually operational between July 2007 and 2009.
From the technological point of view, unlike the TAF, where the motive power is located at the head and at the tail of the train, the TSR units are all motorcars for an even power distribution all along the train. In addition, this gives a great flexibility in the train configuration, whose length may vary according to operational requirements without reducing its performance. As already anticipated, passengers’ comfort has become a priority: all trains are noise-proofed, with air conditioning and hi-fi, the staircases leading to the upper floor are straight and the doors have a step which “disappears” in order to bridge the gap between the train and the quay and to make it easier for passengers to board the train. These trains are equipped with different safety devices such as the SCMT (train drive control system) and cameras on the rail cars (eight cameras are located inside to spot acts of vandalism and to protect passengers safety and two outside to supervise the boarding on and off the train).
