The EB 740 trains were built in 1928 first as control trailers and then, in 1951, some of them were transformed in electric motorcars. The EB740 are much more powerful than the locomotives of the 720 group (later called 730) but outside they are identical to the EB 700. In 1953-54, another 9 units were turned into electric motorcars, with further additions and enhancements: the body was in fact fitted with vestibules located between the driver’s cab and the passenger area with large electro pneumatic folding doors; the railway trucks’ structure was welded and not riveted. A new batch of eight electric motorcars was manufactured by Ernesto Breda for Ferrovie Nord Milano in 1957-58 with technical improvements but fewer seats. Then all the changes made to the last group of motorcars were also extended to the first two groups.
