Between 1928 and 1956, 23 EB 700 units became operational on the FNM network. Some of these electric motorcars were obtained from the transformation of control trailers. The main feature was the 3 mm thick sheet metal, doubled and fixed with round-head rivets that created their typical raised riveted structure. These cars were fitted with 2+2 first-class polished wooden benches and 2+3 third class benches made of wooden strips. T EB 700 were operated by a single driver, with the possibility of activating a “dead-man control” in case the engineman did not feel well.
This device acts on the main power switch, cutting the power to the engines and braking the train to a halt warning at the same time the control personnel and the chief conductor with a loud whistle. After 1936, the EB 700-15, EB 700-16 and EB 700-17 electric motorcars were partially adapted for fast parcel transportation and postal service. The sliding doors were replaced with electro pneumatic leaf doors and toilets were added. These trains were then used on the Milan-Como branch. In 1980, the EB 700-06 was equipped with the railway trucks and the more powerful electric motive power of the EB 740-06, thus joining the EB 740 group. Instead the EB 700-09 was restored by the Railway Cultural Department of the FNM CRA and is still at the FNM Museum in Saronno. Finally, in 1981, the EB 700-23 was equipped with the electric systems of the EB 740-07, thus joining the family too. At the end of 2006, five EB 700 were still operational, two were transferred to other groups and the others demolished or set aside.
