The Light oil-fuelled motorcar (acronym ALn668) was introduced with the classification of the rolling stock used by Ferrovie dello Stato.
This car was designed to be versatile and adaptable to many different environments. In fact it became one of the most important units of the whole rolling stock owned by FS, which has commissioned more than 700 of these cars in 30 years.
The new motor car was designed with 68 seats, 8 first-class seats and 60 second-class seats. Between 1979 and 1995, 16 heat engine motorcars became operational on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo branch. In 1993, FNME was given this branch under concession by the Lombardy region and it received 11 Aln 668 numbered from 112 to 114, from 121 to126 and from 131 to 133, built between 1960 and 1991. One of the priorities of Ferrovie Nord has been not only to enhance and modernize the network but also to upgrade its rolling stock: in 1993, FNME ordered 6 new Aln 668 derived from the Aln 663 FS, numbered from 141 to 146 and in 1995 another two units numbered from 147 to 148 from Fiat that had manufactured the previous ones. The differences between these motorcars and the ones owned by FS are a shorter gear ratio which allows for a maximum speed of 110 km/h instead of 130km/h, greater fuel power and a different internal arrangement with an increase in the number of seats from 63 to 68.
