Characteristics train LeNORD 270-04

Train LeNORD 270-04 Two twin 270-04 locomotives were built in1897 by Costruzioni Meccaniche di Saronno – newly acquired by the German Company Maschinenfabrik Esslingen – and numbered 73 and 74 respectively. They were similar to the previous ones numbered 71 and 72 produced by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1888, but with some differences such as the slide valve, the valve gear located inside the under frame (Stephenson’s system) and the presence of lateral tanks. The 74, later called 270-04, was the only locomotive of this series to remain operational until April 1971, when it was retired for an irreversible valve gear failure and because the boiler was almost at the end of its life cycle. It was the last FNM steam locomotive to be set aside. In 1985, after an external restoration, the former 74 was located in front of the Saronno electric substation, inside the Novate Milanese yard where it is still exhibited.
