Ferrovie Nord Milano (currently FNM) was founded in 1877 to build and operate railway lines in the Lombardy region. The railway network is located in the North-West of the region and links Milan to Novara, Varese, Laveno, Como and Erba-Asso.
In 1985, following the transformation of FNM into a Holding Company and the participation acquired by the Lombardy Region in its share capital, an operational Subsidiary was set up called Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio, in order to manage the railway business.
In 1993 the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo section became operational and in May 1999 the Malpensa Express service was launched to connect Milan to the Malpensa Airport.
In 2004, the network operation and the railway services were separated into two different Companies: Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio which maintained the operation of the network, an the newly-created Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti for passenger transportation. During the same year, the Company was further reorganised with the launch of Ferrovie Nord Cargo (now NORDCARGO), dedicated to freight transportation.
Since December 12th 2004, with the introduction of the S lines, Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti has grown from 600 trains/km per year, with the addition of 106 trains per day, to a total of more than 8.3 million trains/km per year.
On April 29th 2006, a new corporate identity was adopted for the FNM Group Company, Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti became LeNORD and Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio became FERROVIENORD.
